Learning to Enjoy Your Body

For many years, I didn't use my body. My name is Stan and this is the story of how I discovered the joy of exercise and sports. As a little kid, I hated my body. I was overweight and I found running around a football pitch very tiring. The other kids would tease me and I would want to cry. I reacted to this by hiding away and eating chocolate bars, which did nothing to improve my weight. A couple of years ago, I made friends with this guy who suggested I start power walking. I did and I lost a few pounds. Then I started running and eventually found the sport I love: Tennis! I hope you enjoy my blog.

Two Situations in Which a Person Who’s Interested in Martial Arts Should Try BJJ

Recreation & Sports Blog

Here are two situations in which a person who's interested in martial arts but hasn't yet decided which one they should try, should take some BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) classes.

They lack physical strength and don't feel confident about being able to overpower strong opponents

For those who are keen to try a martial art but who lack physical strength and feel intimidated by the prospect of being overpowered by stronger opponents during classes, BJJ is the ideal martial art. The reason for this is that whilst a person can use their strength to their advantage during a grappling session, those who are not very strong can still enjoy the satisfaction and delight of winning one of these sessions, in spite of their inferior physical strength.

This is because strength is just one of the many things that a person can use to overpower their opponents when practising BJJ. For example, if a weak person is grappling with someone who's much stronger than them, they can still win that session if they use their balance, along with a combination of specific hand and feet positions to immobilise their opponent and overpower them. As such, for those who have concerns that their lack of large, strong muscles might leave them feeling incapable or defeated during martial arts classes, BJJ could be the perfect option, as it could help these people to gain greater confidence in their own physical abilities.

They want a hobby that will challenge them mentally and physically

If a person wants a hobby that will present them with both physical and mental challenges, then BJJ might be the right choice for them. This martial art provides ample opportunity for a person to challenge themselves physically, as they'll be expected to spend long periods of time grappling, in a way that will allow them to work on their flexibility, strength, balance and cardiovascular fitness.

However, it will also challenge their mind, as they'll need to quickly assess their opponent's behaviour whilst grappling and decide which lock or guard to do to immobilise them, and will need to do this whilst experiencing the pressure that comes with their opponent attempting to use their own techniques to overpower them. This could improve a person's ability to strategise and make a series of intelligent decisions in quick succession. As such, for a person who gets bored easily if their hobbies are not demanding enough, this martial art would probably be something that they would greatly enjoy.
